ANTRIM SECONDS 2 – CAMPBELLIAN SECONDS 1 Campbellians - TopicsExpress

ANTRIM SECONDS 2 – CAMPBELLIAN SECONDS 1 Campbellians Seconds were the visitors to the Paddy Marks Arena for a league match against Antrim Seconds on Saturday. Antrim had the early pressure and their first chance came in the 10th minute when Stuart Kernaghan’s drive into the circle was deflected high over the crossbar off Brian Creighton’s stick. As the game progressed the rain was so heavy that the pitch began to flood and play became rather scrappy in the very poor conditions. Thankfully the rain eased and the surface water drained off the pitch and at last a proper hockey match could continue. The Antrim defence was solid and they smothered most of the Campbellians attacks while Scotty Mitchell, Kernaghan and Adam Myles linked well with forwards Creighton and Kane but they weren’t able to convert any of the half chances they created as half time arrived. There was little between the teams as the second half progressed and with end to end play chances were missed at both ends. Then in the 47th minute Antrim won a penalty corner and Kernaghan’s shot rebounded off the keeper’s pads to the alert Kane who reacted first to knock the ball back into the net to give his team the 1-0 lead. Antrim kept up the pressure but they squandered several more penalty corner awards. Greg Shirley hobbled off injured to be replaced by Stevie Davis and almost immediately he was unlucky not to divert a cross from the left past the advancing goalkeeper in the 55th minute. Two minutes later Campbellians were level from what can only be described as a freak goal. The ball driven into the Antrim circle flew goalwards, up in the air off Monaghan’s stick and trying to bat it away to safety Adam Monahan deflected it on, over goalkeeper Chris Roe’s head, into the net. The struggle for the winner now intensified and Kane should have done better when he broke in to the circle from the right only to see his shot blocked by the goalkeeper. Then from a rather tame 64th minute attack the ball broke to the right of circle for Kane to slip it quickly back for Kernaghan to sweep it into the net to regain the 2-1 lead for Antrim. Campbellians won a last minute penalty corner but the shot was too high and their final chance was gone as the final whistle sounded. This week the Seconds travel back to Comber where they will play North Down fourths in a league match. Seconds Squad :- C Roe, D Gleghorne, S Gleghorne, R Monaghan, G Shirley, S Mitchell, P McClean, S Kernaghan, L Kane, A Monahan, B Creighton, D Wilson, A Myles and S Davies. COOKSTOWN FOURTHS 3 – ANTRIM THIRDS 2. The Thirds travelled to Coolnafranky on Saturday to play Cookstown Fourths in a league match and after holding a healthy 2- 0 lead for most of the game, both goals scored by Nathan McClenaghan, they ran out of steam in the last ten minutes to eventually lose 3-2.
