ANWAR POSTS BAIL AND FILES NOTICE OF APPEAL PUTRAJAYA, (March 10) — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who was sentenced to five years jail last Friday for sodomy, posted his bail of RM10,000 with one surety at the Court of Appeal registry today. The opposition leader signed the bail documents before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Darmafikri Abu Adam. The Court of Appeal on Friday had directed Anwar to post his bail by 11am today but since Anwar was in Parliament for the opening of the second session of the 13th Parliament in the morning, he arrived at the Palace of Justice about 12.25noon. Anwar, together with his bailor, the chief staff at the PKR headquarters, Ibrahim Yaacob met Darmafikri and subsequently came out of the room at 12.45 noon while Anwar’s brother Rosli Ibrahim was also present. Meanwhile, Anwar also filed a notice of appeal in the Court of Appeal registry earlier today, at about 10am. His counsel Ramkarpal Singh filed the document in the Court of Appeal registry and extended a copy to the Federal Court. He said the defence had 10 days to file in its petition of appeal once obtaining the Court of Appeal’s grounds of judgment. Last Friday, the Court of Appeal here overturned the High Court’s Jan 9, 2012 decision which acquitted Anwar on the charge of sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 26, at a Desa Damansara condominium unit in Bukit Damansara between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008. The three-member panel led by Justice Datuk Balia Yusof Wahi allowed the prosecution’s appeal and found Anwar guilty of the charge before sentencing him to five years jail. However, the court allowed a stay of execution on the Court of Appeal’s decision pending an appeal to the Federal Court and granted Anwar bail at RM10,000. Justice Balia held that the trial judge had erred in his findings that the integrity of the DNA samples had been compromised. — BERNAMA
