ANXIETY - The Road to Recovery And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind... (Romans 12:2a). Having your mind transformed means for it to make a complete change in form, the Greek word is where we get our English word metamorphosis as in a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly or a tadpole morphing into a frog. The mere fact that Paul uses this kind of change as a command gives us hope that change is not only possible but is a reality. The Holy Spirit achieves this transformation of our minds through the Word of God. When the psalmist testifies, Thy word have I treasured in my heart, that I might not sin against Thee, he displays the power of Gods Word to effect change in our lives. The problem is all of us are impatient; we want immediate change whether we struggle with anxiety or not, but it rarely works that way. Anxiety is not something that springs up out of the blue. Most who suffer from anxiety have developed patterns in their life that have been cultivated over years of worry and attempting to control the uncontrollable; you are not going to get over your anxious thoughts with reading a verse or two. The pattern of worry and anxious thoughts must be replaced with a new pattern of reading and studying and meditating on and memorizing Scripture. If you truly desire to be released from your anxious thoughts it is going to require some concerted effort on your part; it is going to take consistency and commitment to the Scriptures. And I know this will be very difficult for most, because anxious thoughts are akin to depression at times and depressed people find it almost excruciating to expend the energy to read and study the Bible, but read and study you must if you truly desire to break the cycle and transform and renew your mind.
