ANY OLD IRON, OR PRE-BREAKFAST RECYCLING. It’s 6.25 a.m., and with sooty hands and arms and coughing like a worn out old cart horse resulting from the raking out of ashes containing a prodigious quantity of old iron nuts and bolts, nails and screws from out of Owd Woodie’s cavernous firebox and ash pan into a rather battered Victorian enamelled “ bread bin “. Carrying the weighty bin I staggered out into the pre-dawn chill and across the Courtyard’s slippery, damp flagstones thence up the stone steps. A few pads further delivered me into the Birch Garden where I was greeted by the mountainous heap of old wood ashes stacked up against the dry stone wall. I tipped the bin’s ashy contents on to a large wire-mesh riddle and then commenced riddling to separate the ash and clinker from that very valuable commodity: scrap iron! The bolts, nuts, screws and nails thus recycled from the old wooden pallet wood that fuels our faithful wood burner Owd Woodie, was then tipped into one of a number of old, yet strong 30 litre plastic drums salvaged from a Blackburn dye works. These drums when full will together with other scrap metal be weighed in at the local scrap metal yard. Himself loves recycling!! dandelionstonetroughs.co.uk
