ANYONE WHO HAS EVER TAKEN a road trip with small children can anticipate the question. Kids seldom understand the concept of time and distance. It might be many miles yet to Grandma’s house, but restless children pepper their parents with questions before they’ve even reached the turnpike. “Are we there yet?” Scripture often describes our lives in terms of a spiritual journey. “Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. Make level paths for your feet,” wrote the author of Hebrews (Hebrews 12:12 – 13). The prophet Jeremiah gave this travel advisory: “Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take” (Jeremiah 31:21). Some stretches of our spiritual roadway are straight and smooth; others are marred by a habitual sin, a time of distance from God or another difficulty that makes our path “rocky.” Isaiah wrote of a different kind of highway: a highway of holiness. In Biblical times, certain roads between temples could only be used by those who were ceremonially clean; therefore, “the Way of Holiness” refers to an actual, literal road. Spiritually speaking, we are on a path that is leading somewhere. How do we know if we are on the highway of holiness in our own journeys? The book of Romans contains signposts often referred to as the “Roman Road,” and the direction they point concludes with this promise: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9).(Acts 2:38)Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. When it comes to our final destination, none of us is “there yet,” but we have God’s Word to lead us in the right direction. Author and speaker Patsy Clairmont wrote, “I don’t know where the long and winding road is leading you, but I do know this: if you remember passing Calvary, you are on the right road.”
