AP poised to become seafood export hub Andhra Pradesh has numerous fish farms which make it rich in fish and prawn production. Our states fish production includes inland fish, marine fish, marine shrimp, brackish water shrimp and inland prawn. Brackish water resources comprise 0.78 lakh hectares for shrimp culture, a coastline of 974 kms and 508 fishing villages. Andhra Pradesh ranks first in coastal aquaculture and fresh water aquaculture. Our state tops in brackish and fresh-water shrimp production, stands at second position in fresh-water fish production and in value of fish/prawn produced and is fourth in marine fish production. The availability of abundant water and a bustling sea food market gives our state the advantage of becoming the marine processing hub of India. We aim to reach 40% of Indias total production of high-valued fish and shell fish from the current level of 20%. There is potential to establish fishing harbours through PPP mode, improve cold chain infrastructure, pre-processing facilities and value-added production facilities. Our state can utilize the diversity of our marine living resources much more effectively for aquaculture. In the process of making AP a seafood export hub, I will ensure that we practice eco-friendly aquaculture in our state, considering environmental and socio-economic needs of the society.
