APC OR PDP? Atiku Abubakar Is To Make A Major Announcement Today (UPDATED) Details Category: POLITICS 02 Feb 2014 Views: 20 Atiku Abubakar on Saturday said he would be making a major announcement today. He made it known yesterday in Twitter: Some political commentators believe that the former Vice President will announce his decision to defect from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Leaderships source, Atiku would on Monday in Yola, capital of Adamawa state declare for APC at a rally to be attended by his supporters. Today, however, he will issue a letter of intent to leave the PDP to the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the source added. In the past weeks Atiku was consulting with his associates across Nigeria whether to shift parties. During what he called consultations on his next role in the emerging political dispensation, Atiku met with his associates in the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), especially in the north east. They urged him to join the APC. When last year Atikus loyalists formed the PDM, some alleged he would move to the new party. However, he said he was a loyal PDP member. The former Vice President had previously left the PDP to join opposition. In 2006, he had joined the defunct Action Congress (AC) and run for president on its platform in 2007. However, it was Umaru YarAdua who won the election. Atiku had returned to the PDP, of which he is a founding member, and became the northern consensus candidate in an arrangement co-ordinated by some northern elite. He sought the presidential ticket of the party in 2011, but current President Goodluck Jonathan had defeated Atiku getting 2736 votes against 805. The signs that Atiku might leave the PDP again emerged in August when he led five governors to storm off the PDP mini convention in Abuja. These governors then declared themselves a new PDP and said they took over the party. Next >
