APC governorship candidate woos Akwa Ibom people THE All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship flag bearer for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Umana Okon Umana has urged the people of the state to embrace the wind of change that is blowing as only through such would their feelings of despondency end. According to Umana, with the APC as a formidable and dependable alternative, the people of the state should be reassured and believed that their hope would be restored. The APC gubernatorial hopeful made this call at the weekend while speaking with journalists on the plans of the party to take over the state from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015. Umana, who dumped the PDP for the APC on grounds of lack of internal democracy and alleged politics of exclusivity, charged Akwa Ibom people to be bold enough to take their destinies in their hands. The former Secretary to the government of Akwa Ibom State asked the people of the state to support the APC, noting that, only such support from them, would guarantee the party to implement the lofty plans of politics of inclusion, openness, equal participation and even distribution of projects for the benefit of all. “The primary reason why we left the PDP was because of the lack of internal democracy in the PDP. As you very well know, the PDP decided to exclude two senatorial districts in Akwa Ibom State from contesting the governorship at the level of the primaries. Certainly that was undemocratic and unconstitutional. “We are happy we have a new platform, which is anchored on the tenet of democratic principle which embraces all who is eligible for any position and that is APC. As you can see, the lack of internal democracy in the PDP, the ripples are being felt because even as we speak, 22 aspirants are in court to challenge the outcome of the last primaries. Some of us who left the party will be vindicated. “We believe that, the people of Akwa Ibom State will give us the necessary support so that we can bring the change to bear in terms of the programme we have for our people like the creation of jobs, wealth, empowerment, industrialization, development of agriculture, science and technology and so on. “So, I want to say that we are ready to take our message to the people of Akwa Ibom State, this message of change, message of hope because we know our people are very despondent, but we thank God today, they have an alternative with APC,” he said. Fielding questions on the allegations that the security agencies could connive with the ruling party to frustrate APC victory in the state, the onetime governorship aspirant on the platform of PDP said, “The way we are today in Akwa Ibom State, I believe, the people will not only speak but I believe the people will be ready to defend their votes. I have no doubt in my mind because when people are pushed to the wall, they have nowhere to go and when we talk about change in Akwa Ibom, I believe the people have been pushed to the wall, they will ensure that their votes counts. It has been demonstrated elsewhere, so our people must take their destinies in their hands and be ready to defend their votes,” he added.
