API Equality - Northern California works to ensure #Equality for #LGBTQ #API #Asian #PacificIslanders. They are participating in Give OUT Day 05.15.14 Growing up as a queer, lesbian Japanese American, Mioi Hanaoka didnt feel like she had a compelling story to tell. When she came out at the age of 15, her father Reverend Nobu Hanaoka became a strong advocate in the LGBTQ, Asian & Pacific Islander, and faith communities. Through our Pink Elephant Project, Mioi explored her narrative and learned the power of telling her story of acceptance. “A lot of Asian families still don’t know what it means to be LGBT and Asian. API Equality - Northern California educates families and communities around issues that they are not aware of. It’s important to bring visibility to this work and spread the message because more people need to be informed in order to change their traditional ways of thinking.” Miois story has touched parents, LGBTQ sons and daughters, allies, API people of faith, and much more.
