APPLES & ORANGES? Which is YOUR fave?? MID-WEEK MUSIC POLL!! Ashford & Simpson wrote this amazing song in 1966. Dusty Springfield(!) wanted to record it, but they wouldnt give it to her as they wanted to sell it to Motown. The first Motown version was the Marvin Gaye / Tammi Terrell in 1967. Only a moderate hit at the time, it has grown in popularity and critical acclaim over the years, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. It was sampled by Amy Winehouse in Tears Dry On Their Own in 2006. Second Motown version in 1968 as a duet featuring the Supremes and the Temptations. Oddly lacking, in my opinion, and nowhere as good as the best Supremes/Temptations collaboration, Im Gonna Make You Love Me, with its soaring Eddie Kendricks vocal. In 1970 it was recorded again at Motown by Diana Ross, as her second solo single -- without the Supremes, but with Ashford & Simpson (who sing and play on it, as well as having produced it). TOTALLY different interprepation of the song, this version was a massive hit. Iconic cover photo.
