ARBUTUS PRESS: Can you give us an excerpt from one of your books that showcases your writing? CHRIS BYRON and TOM WILSON: Our favorite parts of our books are the quotations from old newspapers, travel brochures and advertisements. But we like this from the opening of chapter one of the West Michigan Pike book: “Michigan’s history is inextricably tied to the automobile. As the popularity of motor cars captured the American imagination, and the lust for travel exploded, the need for serviceable roads arose. Although the steamship and rail lines had long served travelers in West Michigan, the automobile offered them a new freedom to explore, without the constraints of time tables and strict itineraries. West Michigan with its scenic lakes, streams, forests and beaches, it’s delightful climate and opportunities for sport and recreation was known as a vacation destination before the turn of the 20th century. Scores of resorts were already established, but for the most part, these were only accessible by train or steamship.
