ARCH + BIG TOE STRENGTH = SPRING Because of shoes, a lot of people have flat feet (no arch). Think about it - shoes have an arch support, so what do your arch muscles do? Thats right - they shut off and atrophy (get small and weak). So heres a little test you can do right now where you can assess the strength of your arch/big toe: - Stand near a wall with your feet shoulder width apart - Spread your toes out on the floor - Do a calf raise on both feet making sure youre pushing through the ball of your foot and big toe - Now, support yourself on the wall with your hand and lift the foot closest to the wall off and hold the position for 10 seconds - Now do the other side Did you notice one side weaker than the other? Ive done this test on numerous people and more often than not, one side is weaker than the other, myself included. If you fit this bill, work 1-leg calf raises in bare feet and really focus on the cues Ive outlined here and youll improve the spring in your step, making you quicker and more powerful.
