ARMED FORCES DAY. Recall so well how during WWII wives were left to run businesses and dairy farms, in addition to their usual workload, and how little money people had when those that did return did so. My mother was a district surgeon in Zululand and worked so hard that she returned exhausted. Hence by elder brother being sent to boarding school aged 5. But she kept us healthy and well fed. Dad was one of the many who retuned with nothing, he having joined up some five years after he had qualified.. The family lived in two rooms [?8 and 9] in the Matatiele Royal Hotel until he had made enough money to get a mortgage to buy a house. Others, who for different reasons had stayed at home, were far better off and some had enriched themselves handsomely making the most of the absence of effective competition.
