ARMOR/CAVALRY HISTORY: We had the pleasure of hosting COL (R) Richard Gillem today. COL Gillem is the son of the legendary LTG Gillem (namesake of Fort Gillem). COL Gillem shared photos and documents with representatives of the Armor Museum, Armor Branch Historian, and HQ Staff. An example of his collection includes the attached photo of BG (promotable) Gillem with MG Patton in 1940. MG Patton at that time was the CG of 2nd AR Division on Fort Benning; BG Gillem was departing Fort Benning to command the 3rd AR Division at Camp Polk. Among LTG Gillems other accomplishments were: - Service under GEN Pershing during the Border Wars in 1916 - Commanded the 2nd Armored Brigade (known as the very first Armored Brigade Commander) - Commanded II Armored Corps in ETO during WWII - Commanded teh Armor Command at Knox - Commanded the 3rd Army
