ART ALERT! Guided walking tour of artwork scheduled for Sterlingfest on July 25. Details below! The Sterling Heights Community Foundation is hosting a free guided walking tour with docents from the Detroit Institute of Arts during Sterlingfest on Thursday, July 25, 2013. This free outdoor event will take place at 2:00 p.m. beginning at Upton House and will allow residents to interact with framed reproductions of seven of the Detroit Institute of Art’s most famous masterpieces that have been installed in the City Center and surrounding area through the DIA Inside/Out program. “The Sterling Heights Community Foundation is very excited to be able to partner with the DIA to display great works of art from the museum’s permanent collection on the Sterling Heights Civic Center campus,” said Board of Directors member Sharon Arend. “It is hoped that as our community reviews these masterpieces, they will develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the arts and will want to visit the DIA to see other artwork in one of the nation’s greatest museums.” The DIA Inside/Out Program, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, provides an open air gallery to connect residents with artwork outside of traditional museum walls. From June until September, Sterling Heights residents will have the opportunity to view these famous replicas while walking within the city. In addition to the guided tour on July 25, the artwork will also be accessible throughout the entire Sterlingfest art and music fair scheduled for July 25-27. Other foundation events, including a senior citizen trip to tour the DIA and the announcement of a high school art contest, are being planned. Residents are encouraged to take pictures of family and friends viewing the art pieces in the community throughout the display and upload them to the Community Foundation’s Facebook page. The selected artworks include: • “The Countess de Brac as Aurora” by Jean Marc Nattier • “Konigsee” by Wilhem Wex • “Eleonora of Toledo and Her Son” by Agnolo Bronzino • “Allegory of Hope” by Alessandro Turchi • :Boy with Plaid Scarf” by Robert Cozad Henri • “Flowers in a Glass Vase” by Rachel Ruysch • “Portrait of Postman Roulin” by Vincent van Gogh These pieces can be found at City Hall, Dodge Park, the Public Library, the Nature Center, the Recreation Center, the Senior Center, and Upton House. Additional event information and interactive maps will be available on the SHCF and DIA websites as well as on Sterling Heights Television throughout the three month display. Upton House is located at 40433 Utica Road. For more information, please contact the Sterling Heights Community Foundation at (586)446-2481 or [email protected].
