[ARTICLE] AKMU, NOT KNOWING YANG HYUN SUK, CHOSE YG BECAUSE OF “NO TRAINING” The sibling duo AKDONG MUSICIAN (“AKMU”, LEE CHAN HYUK & LEE SOO HYUN) won the ‘K-pop Star Season 2’. The winner of the audition program was able to choose one between SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment and JYP Entertainment. Eventually, AKMU chose to go with YG and released their debut album there. In a recent interview with TV Report, AKMU talked about why they chose YG Entertainment (“YG”) saying, “We made our choice without prejudice. Both of us thought carefully about the audition process. YG was the one that gave us the most flexibility. YG listened to what artists said and let us have first-hand experience.” As for SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment, AKMU added, “The two companies taught us very well. But YG did not teach us anything. YG said, ‘Do as you like, do what you can enjoy.’ We liked that. YG did not train us. From a long ago, I liked listening to EPIK HIGH’s songs, and when we met them, they made us feel very comfortable. We also liked that atmosphere.” In fact, the younger sister LEE SOO HYUN did not know of the concept of ‘agency’ at all. Of course, the duo did not know well about YG’s CEO, YANG HYUN SUK, because when they were little, they were living in Mongolia, where it was hard to access the K-pop culture. Only the older brother LEE CHAN HYUK liked BIGBANG. “Before we participated in ‘K-pop Star’, I did not hear about ‘SM’, ‘YG’ or ‘JYP’. I had to search about them thinking ‘What are they?’ Before I met the judges of the audition program, I learned about them a lot. In particular, I was surprised to know that Mr. YANG, our boss, is a very famous person. I only knew Seo Taiji & Boys and the name of their song ‘I Know’, and later I watched a video clip, in which Mr. YANG practiced the song’s choreography. (LEE SOO HYUN dancing the moves herself) It was awesome.” After signing the exclusive contract with YG, AKMU started to feel nervous about their boss, YANG HYUN SUK because the position as a judge and the position as a CEO of an agency cannot be the same. “At first, we were nervous. We heard that Mr. YANG was strict. We thought that he could be. But when we met him as our boss, not our judge, he was sweeter to us. He takes care of us like our father. When we were having meals, he even placed side dishes near us so that we could eat them comfortably. People around us were surprised. (Smiled)” AKMU were very happy about their joining the YG Family. They were still amazed at the fact that they were with singers like BIGBANG, 2NE1, EPIK HIGH and LEE HI. “We get along with LEE HI, who is also among the youngest. Our company treats three of us very well. YG even allowed us to go watch the concert in Japan. LEE HI could have been the youngest in YG forever, but thanks to LEE SOO HYUN, she now has a ‘younger sister’. I am really glad to be able to meet BIGBANG, 2NE1 and EPIK HIGH. Still I cannot believe that I am in the same company with the singers, whose songs I enjoyed listening to.
