ARTIST PROFILE - Owen Thompson I paint in response to the way I am moved by the beauty of the natural world The fluidity of the watercolour medium seems perfectly suited to capturing the atmospheric affects of space and distance, and is able to reproduce in microcosm many of natures structural forms and patterns. The way it behaves, like nature itself, always retains an element of surprise, and is not easily predicted or controlled. It’s wonderful but elusive qualities present an ongoing challenge to one’s technical skills. The finished landscapes, whilst appearing ‘realistic’, have a mood or quality intended to distil the landscape into timeless, transcendent images. They are essentially acts of homage to convey feelings that I hope people might relate to from their own experiences and respond to. Owen has a Bach Fine Arts from the Adelaide Art School and a Diploma of Art from UNSW College of Fine Arts. He has had twenty solo exhibitions and has also been in group shows since 1985 including through the Holdsworth and Katoomba Fine Art Galleries. He has had work commissioned by the Nepean Hospital, Penrith, and has artworks in private collections including UNSW College of Art, Adelaide CAE, Lane Cove Council, Artbank Ltd and the Nepean Hospital. His work also appears in a range of art publications such as the The Australian Watercolour Institute. Owen has taught drawing and watercolour at The Julian Ashton Art School for twenty five years.
