ARTS DISTRICT AREA RETAILERS CELEBRATE “PLAID FRIDAY AND SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY” The myriad galleries, home design shops, antique and vintage stores, restaurants and bars in 18b The Las Vegas Arts District and surrounding area are all gearing up for Plaid Friday (Shop Local and Independent) (Friday after Thanksgiving) and Small Business Saturday (Saturday after Thanksgiving). The 18b neighborhood is loosely bounded by Hoover Avenue to the North (The highrises, Newport and Soho where participating businesses Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art and The Lady Silvia are housed), Commerce to the West, Las Vegas Blvd. East and Oakey to the South. The area is the locale for First Friday, Preview Thursday and now many other events throughout the week. The Arts District and surrounding area small independent businesses will be open both days and offering special discounts, FREE drawings and refreshments during these 2 days. Part of the Shop Local movement, the stores are inviting Las Vegans to come to the Arts District and shop. Dine at one of our many tasty eateries. Stay for the unique and low-key nightlife. The name Plaid Friday was conceived from the idea of weaving the individual threads of small businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates the diversity and creativity of independent businesses. Plaid Friday is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays. Conceptualized in Oakland, CA, Plaid Friday strives to bring back the days of shopping for friends and family in small independent retail stores. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 30, holiday shoppers are invited to celebrate the fourth annual Small Business Saturday by patronizing small and local businesses. Last year, more than 100 million people nationwide participated in the shopping holiday. The Las Vegas community is invited to visit the high concentration of independently-owned businesses, studios and galleries located in the 18b Las Vegas Arts District and surrounding area in downtown Las Vegas. Between 1993 and 2011, small businesses helped create 64 percent of net new jobs in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even during the economic downturn, small businesses pushed economic growth, accounting for 67 percent of net new jobs. Clearly, small businesses are the backbone of the U.S. economy, helping to strengthen our communities and create new opportunities for a talented workforce.
