Cong blames global factors, Opp for economic crisis statesman news service New Delhi, 21 August As the rupee continues its free fall, repeatedly breaching the 64 mark against the US dollar and 100 mark against the British pound in a historic low and the stock markets continue to plunge, the ruling Congress today sought to blame “international factors” and the Opposition parties-generated “doom-and-gloom” atmosphere for the prevailing crisis gripping the Indian economy. The Congress national spokesman Mr Meem Afzal claimed, “This is an international phenomenon. Brazil, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Africa ~ everywhere their currencies are falling. This is because of the situation in the US and its policies.” He said the Congress-led UPA government “has been trying its best to grapple with this situation, but there are certain global factors involved here”. Mr Afzal also blamed the Opposition parties for the grim economic scenario. “We are also getting low investment because the Opposition has created this atmosphere of fear and gloom-and-doom about our economic situation. They had opposed foreign direct investment. So, they are also responsible for it.” The Manmohan Singh government has been drawing fire from the principal Opposition BJP as well as the Left parties for its alleged mishandling of the economy, its inept measures and faulty policies that, they charge, have pushed the economy into deep crisis while leading to high inflation and unemployment. The CPI general secretary Mr S Sudhakar Reddy today squarely blamed the Prime Minister and the finance minister for the current economic situation in the country. He called for nationwide people’s struggles to force the UPA government to abandon its “neo-liberal” policies. Mr Reddy charged, “We are worried India has to pay dearly for the fault of keeping the UPA-II in power.
