ASD Study Session November 11, 2014 Garrick Peterson-educational support services. We will be explaining the increased rigor of the new core. Shari Taylor-all of this has already been presented to all the principals in the district. DOK-depth of knowledge. Karen Hess-student improvement and assessment, she presented to all G/T coordinators in the state. Hess Cognitive Rigor Matrix-enhance assessment. “Cognitive rigor”-challenging, does not mean more, presenting info in a new way. Level 1-basic recall, term, principle, concept, perform a routine procedure/emphasis on facts, student finds right answer and there is no debating the correctness, can be difficult, does not require reasoning. Level 2-use of information, conceptual knowledge. Simple graphs, data-interpret/use, similarities and differences, students must explain how and why, often estimate or interpret to respond, organize/display, 2 or more steps with decision points along the way. Level 3-requires reasoning, developing a plan or sequence of steps to approach problem, requires some decision-making and justification, abstract, complex, or non-routine, often more than one possible answer or approach, more than one correct response or approach, students must research, justify, explain the situation, complex or abstract thinking Level 4-an original investigation or application to real world, requires time to research problems solve, and process multiple conditions of the problem or task, non-routine manipulations, across disciplines/content areas/multiple sources (Example: original science fair projects) David Smith-went over SAGE reports given to parents. Wendy asked-how does DOK work with the bookmark used for SAGE scoring? (David had previously explained the bookmark method. Questions that received the most correct answers were placed in the #1 slot, the question with the 2nd most correct answers was #2, etc.) Theoretically, question #1 could have a DOK of 3 and questions #2 could have a DOK of 1. How does that work with showing SAGE proficiency? David said that each question had a DOK level and those were taken into account. The old benchmark was a DOK Level 1 and the new benchmark is a DOK Level 3. Sam Jarman discussed the numbers for the new elementary in Lehi. I could not see the info well, so my numbers may be incorrect. North Point-887 (south boundary at 1500 North) New Elementary-725 (also takes in Jordan Willows) Snow Springs-919 (north boundary at Main Street) Elementary schools are built for an optimal capacity of 860. Can go up to 950. Over 1,000 and trailers are necessary. There was some discussion that parents would be concerned about safe walking paths. The superintendent stated that the district would work with the city to resolve those concerns. Boundaries for New Lehi High School: The city of Lehi expects 3,000 new units to be built in north Lehi in the next 2-3 years as well as 1,000 new units in south Lehi in the next 2-3 years. With boundary at 2100 North, the new high school would be at 1664 in 2019 and 1767 in 2019. That only takes into account move-ups, that number does not include new construction. These numbers show that we probably need a new Lehi high school in 5-8 years. Freedom Elementary will now feed to 4 different high schools. High Schools are built for 2,000 students. Westlake currently has 16 portables and Lone Peak has 12. JoDee asked about finding out about free and reduced lunches with the various boundary options with a north/south versus an east/west split. We do not want to create inner-city schools.
