ASEM: Thai junta leaders legitimacy is recognized ? ..... It has been more than 6 months since Thai general launched the military coup to end political turmoil .Thai general and current prime minister of Thailand Prayuth Chan-ocha staged the bloodless coup to overthrow democratically elected government of prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra in the late May, paving the way for him to seize power. His intervention in Thai politics has been denounced severely by international community particularly European Union leaders and the United States of America. Being a junta leader, Prayuth has moved to strictly govern his peoples basic freedoms, and invoke the martial law, allowing military government to crack down on any pro-democracy protest. In response to the military coup and human rights repressions, the international community considered the military government and Prayuth premiership as illegitimate, demanding junta leaders to immediately transfer the power to civilian government and restore basic freedoms, democracy, and rule of law in the Kingdom. However, Prayuth has gradually gained legitimacy as he was invited to attend the 10th Asia-Europe meeting in Milan,Italy. During the summit, Prayuth was seen as being treated with the courtesy by the European leaders that have criticized him for months. This clearly indicates that Thai military government and the coup leader are formally recognized by the world leaders and no longer illegitimate.
