ASPIRATION PNEUMONIA This is an inflammation of the bronchial airways as a result of inhaling foriegn materials through the oropharynx into the lungs. Such foriegn materials that can be aspirated include vomitus, food, saliva and other liquids. An inflammation of the airways may lead to -Pus in lungs (empyema) - Swelling and inflammation of the lungs -Infection of the lungs (pneumonia) SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS -chest pains -wheezing -bluish colouration of the skin -productive cough with couloured, foul smelling sputum -fatigue -fever -Shortness of breath -Breath odour -Excessive sweating -Difficulty in swallowing On examination -Cracking sounds are heard in the lungs -There is increased pulse rate -There is decreased oxygen supply Laboratory investigations include: -FBC -Chest x-ray -Blood culture -Bronchoscopy -Arterial blood gas -CT scan of the chest -Sputum examination If not treated it can lead to *Lung abcess *Shock *Bacteremia *Lung failure Treatment ranges from the use of antibiotics to other advanced techniques.
