ASSESS YOUR FRIENDS QUOTE: “A GOOD FRIEND IS A GREAT ASSET” Text: “And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself” 1 Samuel 20:17. One of the things that are pivotal to greatness in life is the company (friends) one keeps. Not all friends are good; sometimes you need to scrutinize then so that you will know which to discard or retain. Too many friends not only constitute a burden, they can also constitute a distraction. I have seen people lose focus and I have seen some backslide by the reason of the friends they hang around with. I have also seen people succeed by the same reason! I guess the Prodigal son must have been influenced by some group of rascals he was hanging out with. If not, where would he have got the effrontery to confront his father, asking for his inheritance while the father was still alive. Besides, the elder brother was still at home. The truth is; it is either you influence your friends or they influence you; negatively or positively. No doubt, friends will be coming into your life, especially when you are succeeding. However, it is left to you to assess each of them to know which of them to retain or ignore. Friends can be evaluated by asking question thus: Which of your friends challenge you to grow spiritually – I mean do they bring you closer to God? Do they respect your visions, ideas, feelings and dreams or they just criticize them? Do you feel better and more fulfilled after being with them? Which of them actually tell you the truth – or call you to order when you are going astray? Which of them voluntarily offered help when you were down, either in cash or in kind? Get ready to drop whoever does not pass the above test. David and Jonathan had a wonderful relationship. At a stage Jonathan had to act courageously to save David’s life. May God give you a Jonathan and may you become one to someone today in Jesus name. Your friends do not have to be many; what matters is that they must be good. Have a nice weekend!
