ASUP to Resume Nationwide Strike: Following the failure of the federal government to convincingly fulfil any of the promises and agreements reached with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) before the suspension of the earlier strike on 17th July, 2013, the union has resolved to go on a nationwide strike on Friday, October 4, 2013. Disclosing the resolution while issuing a communiqué of the union’s 75th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, to newsmen in Jos, the National Publicity Secretary of the union, Mr Chirman Clement Selchum said: “The strike can actually not be described as a fresh one; it was only suspended in July.” However, ASUP has vowed not to renege on the planned strike except these issues are addressed by the government and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the review of the Polytechnic Act. ASUP decried the anti-labour stance of the National Assembly as exemplified by the recently proposed removal of minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list of the constitution to the concurrent list; as well as the proposed legislation against declaration of Industrial Strike by unions in the tertiary sector. As part of its grievances, the union lamented the government’s abuse of the laws establishing TETfund and the culpable lack of commitment of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to meeting the needs and demands of polytechnic education in Nigeria. The union also noted that “the CONTISS 15 Migration for Lower cadres, Needs Assessment of Polytechnics, release of whitepaper of visitation to Federal polytechnics, discrimination between polytechnics and university graduates in job placement and career progression and the constitution of Governing Councils to Federal polytechnics earlier omitted, were among the issues it brought before the Federal Government in their last negotiation, but added that government has failed to address any of them since it suspended it strike in July”. Faulting the growing tension in the nation’s polity as a result of the volatile comments and activities of politicians and interest groups, ASUP has called on Nigeria political class and other interest groups to exercise restraint on their utterances and activities in the interest of peace, unity and security of the nation. #daily times#Thisdays
