*** ASUU Denies Snubbing Senate Committee’s Invitation - THISDAY The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has refuted reports that its representatives did not show up at a meeting by the Senate Committee on Education on Tuesday, to discuss some critical issues affecting the sector, especially the industrial actions embarked upon by various unions. The union explained that its representatives comprising the president, three past presidents, the vice-president, the Legal Officer, the Welfare Officer and three other officers arrived the National Assembly, on time to honour the meeting scheduled for 2:p.m. The National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge Isa, in a statement issued Wednesday, said the officers were asked to wait, while the committee met with representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and some members of management of various education boards for the polytechnics and Colleges of Education. He added that the team waited for two and a half hours (up to 3.30p.m.) before deciding to leave for another meeting scheduled for 3p.m. “On the way to the other meeting, ASUU President called the Chairman of the Senate Committee to brief him on the development and requested that another, earliest, date be fixed for the meeting. The Senate Committee Chairman on Education promised to do so,” the statement read. ASUU reiterated its willingness to enter discussions with any individual or group concerning the ongoing strike, which it said, was brought about by the refusal of government to implement the 2009 agreement it entered into with the union. WHAT ARE OUR THOUGHTS?
