ASUU STRIKE: NANS CANNOT ROMANCE ANY PARTY- Akinfolarin Akinwale Premised on the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Nigeria, the General Secretary of Educational Management Students Association, Adekunle Ajasin University chapter Akinfolarin Akinwale (a.k.a BTG) on OSRC T.V station, Ondo State, posit that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) cannot engage in politics or romancing a particular section on ASUU and federal government dispute. According to him, a contract or agreement that is duly signed by parties is deemed to be binding on the parties involved, but the Nigerian government that should uphold this has failed to implement such agreement which it entered into with ASUU in 2009, which in turn leads to a breach and violation of contract. “This agreement provided for government funding of quality higher education for Nigerians. Provision of teaching and learning facilities, laboratory equipment for science students and research grants, payment of earned allowances, retirement age and progressive increase in annual budgetary allocation to the educational sector of 26 per cent, which is the UN standard.” Akinfolarin said the strike is really affecting the students as they cannot afford to play politics with their future, saying that ASUU should be considerate too for the interest of the student and the society at large. He appealed to the government and ASUU to speed up actions in resolving the October 2009 joint agreement between them in order to avert national crisis and save the nation’s education.
