ASUU Strike: Education Minister Must Go – NANS The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to immediately remove the Minister of Education, Professor Ruq’ayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, over incessant crises rocking the nation’s tertiary education sector. NANS president, Prince Miaphen, in a statement in Abuja, made available to newsmen on Tuesday, said Rufa’i had shown inability to manage the crisis rocking the education sector, following the ongoing nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He noted that apart from the ASUU strike , research institutions in the country had been on strike for more than five months before the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) strike that lasted for about two months. Miaphen said NANS was fully insupport of the ASUU strike andurged the Federal Government to honour the 2009 agreement entered with the union. “NANS wishes to state its unflinching support to the actions of ASUU and calls on the Federal Government to toe the path of honesty and with immediate effect desist from paying lip service to education. “We, therefore, call on our teeming members to, in the spirit of solidarity, exercise patience with our lecturers until their legitimate demands are met. “More worrisome is the clear incapacitation of the Minister of Education, Professor Rufa’i, in handling the incessant instability in the education sector. “NANS, therefore, calls for immediate removal of the minister and immediate replacement with competent hand,” he said.
