AT JOURNEY’S END Do not love the world or the things of the world. – 1 John 2:15 “We cannot serve two masters.” We’ve read this or heard this over and over again everywhere we go — in church, in the classroom, in the office. As transient pilgrims of this earth, we are all but passing by. We don’t own anything in this world. Not those hectares of land, luxury cars, bank accounts or jewelry. Everything is on loan to us by God. We enjoy them, yes, but only for a moment’s bliss. Last All Souls’ Day saw me at the cemetery visiting the tombs of departed loved ones. I jokingly told my brother-in-law that we should thank God that we are still the visitors and not the ones being visited. Being at the cemetery reminded me again of the reality that at our journey’s end, when our life on earth is over and done with, we will be joining all the departed in the graveyard. One of these days, we will have to say goodbye to this earthly life, whether we like it or not. We will leave behind everything that we’ve worked hard for, and accumulated through the years. Yes, we will say goodbye to the material world. But we will finally welcome heaven. Dr. Henry L. Yu (henrio_md@yahoo) Reflection: Just as we brought nothing with us when we came into this world, we will also bring nothing with us when we go back home to the Lord. Father, remind us not to limit our focus on the material things of this world but rather on the eternal things in Your presence. St. Egwin, pray for us
