AT THE Sunset United Methodist Church, Pasadena, TEXAS for the funeral of PATTY JOYCE TURNER STICKLAND, an incredible woman who figured in my past in significant ways WE met in 1967, when i became a follower of sorts of her son, Paul Turner, Jr., whom i met at San Jacinto College, shortly after i set foot there, and Paul became my role model as an activist and militant. Ms. Turner - Pauls mon, pretty much non-political, would always welcome me into her home, feeding me, as all students are usually hungry - a kind lady with a giant heart. Paul, who is here from Austin, and whom i have not seen in 44 years, led me into SDS, the Students for a Democratic Society. As my calling developed, this led to MAYO, the seminal Mexican American Youth Organization, La Raza Unida Party, the Chicano civil rights movement, marching with MLK, working with Cesar Chavez, and fighting for truth and JUSTICE... The Chicano Moratorium Against the War in Vietnan, workng in the barrios of East Los with Rosalio Munoz, the many actions we are still waging to fight military intervention, or in the all lives matter discourse, etc., all because of Paul Turner, Jr... But i digress...IF there is a heaven, then she is there, right now. The tribes will gather shortly, Herreras, Riveras, Turners, Calbillos, to celebrate a wonderful life...she will be greatly missed but the grief in our hearts will be lessened, finding confort this day, by the words of the preacher, who says that since she will live in our hearts memory forever, then it is as if she really hasnt gone anywhere...que en paz descanse..
