AT THIS YEARS END 2014 At this year’s end we vowed that we would never cry, Stiff upper lip, shoulders back, and eyes so very dry. But it is a hopeless promise, one we cannot keep. Memories Into our aching hearts forever slowly creep. Eyes mist up, mouths runs dry, we can hardly swallow, A void fills our inner soul, leaving our stomachs hollow. Our minds too active for our fast aging ‘ancient’ frame, Gone the days when our bodies were our claim to fame. We would dance the night away under a waxing moon, Then sleep; only to awake for more punishment at noon. Sit around an open fire spinning tales and a raucous joke; With people who had a kindred spirit, true Rhodesian Folk. Loving parents long time gone to their eternal rest, That empty feeling when our siblings first flew the nest, Then the joy of grandchildren to fill that empty void; Beautiful cherubs with whom no-one can get annoyed. Now they too will leave the nest, off to pastures new, Friends once so plentiful, now alas only very few. That is what we will never see again, a truly united spirit, A kinship one can never buy; friendships without limit. Three score and ten years are granted to us here on earth. So blessed with memories, we can never count their worth. Some here now on borrowed time as we recall things past. Friends to whom we now fly the flag, saluting at half mast. Make a circle of hands once more, before our memories blot. Ask the burning question; “Should auld acquaintance be forgot. And never brought to mind” posed Burns that Scottish poet. Immortal words “For auld lang syne, a cup of kindness yet” Cheers to loved ones whom made us what we are today “We’ll take a cup of Rhodie kindness yet”...what else can we say. To Rhodesians, wherever you may be on earth. God Bless you in 2015. Written by Alf Hutchison .
