ATF - Albuquerque Teachers Federation President Ellen Bernstein provides the following comments on the mid-term election results: “Overall, Tuesdays election results were a disappointment for Albuquerque educators. Teachers have worked tirelessly with candidates who respect and listen to classroom professionals on legislative issues that support schools, communities and students. Some of the legislators who were unseated shared our vision for fully funded schools with a well-rounded curriculum, and where teachers receive the support they need,” said President Bernstein. Bernstein continued, “The election results point to a continuation of this administration’s policies of high stakes attached to standardized testing and turning schools into factories with students as products. What the newly re-elected Governor proposes as ‘reforms’ will ultimately lead to unequal opportunities and a diminished voice for community members, teachers, and students. When this new legislature is seated, we will redouble our efforts to fight for the world-class education system that New Mexico needs and our children deserve. We, as educators, remain steadfast in our commitment to our communities, our schools and our students.” “The Albuquerque Teachers Federation would like to thank Representatives Emily Kane and Elizabeth Thompson for their service to children and their support for educators. In addition, we commend those who became candidates for the legislature—though not elected—but who carried forward our shared vision for public education. I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who worked in this election for our endorsed candidates. Their energy and dedication are an example for us all,” concluded Ellen Bernstein.
