ATLANTIC OCEAN– USS Vella Gulf welcomed its four newest Chief Petty Officers this past Tuesday during the Chief Petty Officer Pinning Ceremony. Personnel Specialist Lissette Gill, Logistics Specialist Jason Atos, Operations Specialist Christopher Patnode, and Sonar Technician Kirk Murdock entered as Chief Petty Officer Selectees, and after a benediction and words from the Commanding Officer and Command Master Chief, they were pinned and joined the ranks of Chief Petty Officers before them, and their pride and emotion was evident to all. “I feel humbled and honored to put on the rank of Chief Petty Officer,” said PSC Lissette Gill. “The past six weeks have been filled with many tests and challenges and have taught us the importance of unity and service. The challenges will only become more difficult, but I am determined to lead with integrity and loyalty.” Commanding Officer Capt. Robert D. Katz also had a few words of wisdom to impart upon the new members of the Chief’s Mess. He stated, ‘“Go ask the chief” means a lot. Do not fall into an idle position of complacency, that is all too easy and selfish to the Sailors you will be entrusted. Rather be bold, take charge, drive forward, and motivate your Sailors; help guide and train the Junior Officers looking to you for everything as they start their career.” Command Master Chief Scott Nagle was pleased with the Chief Petty Officer training program and the new additions, stating, I am extremely proud of the pride and professionalism displayed by the VELLA GULF Chiefs throughout CPO-365 Phase II. Chief Petty Officers Gill, Patnode, Murdock, and Atos are outstanding new additions to the Mess and bring their own unique Navy experiences to the team. Although the ceremony was a packed one, filled with members of the Vella Gulf crew, a few were missed in the audience. “I was very nervous and couldn’t believe this was happening. At the same time, I was sad that my wife would not be here to pin me. At the same time, I know that I have her supporting me all the way from back home,” said Logistics Specialist Chief Petty Officer Jason Atos. Vella Gulf is currently on her way home from over a six month deployment in the Sixth Fleet Area of Operations in support of Ballistic Missile Defense (Story by ENS Karina M.
