ATLAS UPDATE DAY 10: Most of the final results from testing are in. Final bone marrow results show no signs of Leukemia, marrow-invading viruses, foreign or abnormal cells...all good! As expected, the viral count for mono rose. The viral load for CMV is lower which is great, its not taking the opportunity to worsen things. The results from the biopsies show no fungal infections so far but are still under review. High dose steroids were started on Wednesday night and Attys fever broke almost immediately, the right lymph node also shrunk exponentially! The steroids are to treat the overactive and ineffective immune system response that his body mounted against the mono. So not only are we fighting the mono, but the ineffective immune response as well. HE IS IMPROVING though! He ate a few curly fries and bites of banana today...the first hes eaten in literally a week. Well have to get him eating and drinking, see a decrease in viral load for the mono, and a recovery of neutrophils (1,000), as well as ween him off of the steroids, TPN, and pain meds before we can consider returning home.
