ATOMIC TANZANIA New nuclear power plants in Africa also mean more uranium mining, contaminating the environment and endangering the local population. Radiation levels around some mines are dangerously high and there has been a sharp increase in birth deformities. Frequently, protesters like Golden Misabiko are thrown into jail or even murdered. We investigate the actions of the nuclear industry in Africa. ATOMIC AFRICA DOCUMENTARY Though many consider the risks incalculable, Tanzania is planning to mine its radioactive uranium. A history of gold mining shows that the country, its people and abundant wildlife stand to gain little from doing so. In southern Tanzania, the uranium is thick and close to the earths surface. That brings yet another danger: A gust of wind can blow uranium dust from surface mining operations and into the surrounding landscape. -DW OP ED Tanzania is planning to mine uranium in the Selous, one of the largest game reserves in the world. The risks are incalculable. What does this have to do with a highway through the Serengeti? To us, it shows the lack of caring about conservation from the current Tanzania government that the country, in the past, has had such a strong history of. It is just one of examples of get rich schemes that show little overall caring for the environment, wildlife or the people of Tanzania.
