ATPL subjects simplified: landing gear. Retracable landing gears are typically hydraulically operated, but you find also mechanically operated ones e.g. the King Air B100 Baron BE58. -(1) Make yourself familiar with the function of the landing gear. (2) Make yourself familiar with the location of any gear relate CB (3) Study the checklist items related to gear malfuctions (3) Do a good pre-flight inspection on landing gears at leat know what to look for, e.g. mechanical uplocks, uplock release cables, hyrdaylic hioses etc (4) Study your handbook and make yourself familiar which electrical failures will affect the normal gear extension. (5) in case of a gear malfunction: use the checklist and take your time. (this is also why I strongly discourage to fly with minimum fuel just over to the other airport. In case of a gear malfunction, you run out of options because you run out of fuel. Do not be shy to declare an emergency, use a long runway with all CFR equipment. (6) Do a fly by, but no stunt maneuvers. The tower cant really see a lot (7) Use the gear warning system intelligently. Know when it comes off. A silent gear warning is a good indication of a safe gear (8) practice at least once to exchange light bulbs on one of the gear indicator lights (9) NEVER ever test gear safety systems on the ground. e.g. the gear will not come up with the sqat switch depressed. A good friends C210 was damaged by a mechanic who wanted to check exactly that... (10) use landing checklists. Most gear up landings are pilot induced. I was lucky so far. Only two gear malfunction. King Air 90, hydraulic gear that is held up by hydraulic pressure. Hose not connected properly. Any time the pump came up to boost pressure, fluid dumped overboard and empty on landing. HYDR fluid Lo annunciator on. It was very low IFR, declared emergency, pumped gear out as per checklist and landed uneventfully. The FAA never asked a question. The second case was in a C210 on a bush strip. One passeenger asked is this normal...? the right main gear only partially extended. The C210 (this model) has only one green gear light. This was ON. It came out that one of the many micro switches in the C210s landing gear was bad. Next week we bought the mirror. Please add anything on that topic that comes into your mind. Here a video of a B100 with a gear problem. Nothing serious. https://youtube/watch?v=9jk-MuWS8TQ
