ATTENTION: CHICAGO LATINO/A PLAYWRIGHTS!!! EL SEMILLERO :: ALTA Chicago’s Latino Playwright’s Circle PROGRAM OVERVIEW: El Semillero (Spanish for seedbed or nursery) is a Chicago-based playwriting circle dedicated to fostering emerging Latino playwrights and their work. Sponsored by ALTA Chicago (Alliance of Latino Theatre Artists), El Semillero will select six early-career playwrights to develop first drafts of original plays over the course of 9 months. El Semillero sessions will take place twice a month at Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre in Lincoln Park. At each session, playwrights will read pages aloud from their plays-in-progress for discussion, and will seek feedback from each other. On occassion, participants will also have the opportunity to receive feedback from established Chicago Latina/o Theatre artists. Additionally, as a branch of El Semillero, mandatory writing-workshops will be available on a monthly basis forEl Semillero participants to sharpen their writing skills while working on their current plays-in-development. These workshops will also be open and available to the public on a first-come first-serve basis, and will be facilitated by working Latina/o Theatre artists in the industry. At the end of the program, plays written through El Semillero will be showcased in a public reading. El Semillero aspires to strengthen the Latino theater community in Chicago by fostering a family of emerging Latina/o artists who challenge, inspire, and champion each other in the development of a new Latino narrative. WHEN WILL EL SEMILLERO MEET? · Sessions will occur twice a month, three-hours per session starting on June 2nd, 2014. · Writing workshops will occur four times a year. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE? All applicants must: -Be 18 years of age or older. -Identify as Latina/o or Hispanic -Be based in the Chicago area. -Be interested in developing a new play. -Have previous writing experience . (Experience can range anywhere from playwriting, poetry, fiction, short story, prose, etc.) -Have some knowledge and experience in theatre. -Collaborate and play well with others. -Be open to constructive criticism. -Be available to attend all El Semillero sessions.
