ATTENTION DIABETICS..........During a visit with my diabetic husbands endocrinologist yesterday, we learned some very exciting news. The artificial pancreas is now a reality. The device, which is built using an Iphone, is completed and in its trial stages. It is proving to be very successful. The sensor of the artificial pancreas will be implanted under the skin giving a blood sugar reading every 5 minutes and then performing the duties of a normal pancreas by releasing the proper dosage of insulin. The device will first be offered to Type I diabetics. .....I asked the doctor about safeguards which would prevent the mechanism from malfunctioning and dumping fatal amounts of insulin into the body. He said there are multiple safeguards which will act as a barrier for the patient. Overdose will not be an issue..............I want to stress that the artificial pancreas is a PHENOMENAL and MONUMENTAL step in the regulation of diabetes. It will alleviate any further deterioration of the bodys circulatory system, and it will stabilize any existing complications. It will add years to the diabetics life as well as to allow him or her to live a normal life.......To put this MEDICAL MIRACLE into perspective I will add....My husbands doctor was ecstatic about the artificial pancreas, and during our visit, he could not quit smiling. When you see the joy in the face of your doctor, you know that it is indeed a true miracle, and you also know that you have a doctor who cares about his patients............I hope all diabetics become informed about the new artificial pancreas.
