ATYPICAL MYOPATHY UPDATE - PLEASE SHARE Following our post yesterday about cases of Atypical Myopathy in Kent, we have now had our first case of Atypical Myopathy confirmed at Paton and Lee. Rossdales Equine Hospital have diagnosed 5 cases of Atypical Myopathy in the past 36 hours. The disease has a 75% fatality rate. Early diagnosis and treatment will give your horse the best prognosis, but prevention is the key - if you have any acer family trees / plants that your horses have access to, please move your horses or fence off the acers (Maples and Sycamores are the most common acer trees we have). The seeds are very distinctive because theyre the ones that look like helicopters (see picture). Symptoms include sudden onset stiffness, dullness and depression, weakness or difficulty standing, dark red coloured urine, toxic (purple) mucous membranes. If you have any concerns, please feel free to call the office and speak to one of our vets.
