AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY-2013(R)-Jan. 21. By:The Movie Guy. Misery loves family is the tagline for this all-star family dramedy. After the death of the family patriarch Beverly Weston, played by Oscar nominee Sam Shepard, his wife Violet, played by Oscar winner Meryl Streep, is left fighting mouth cancer & a growing dependency on pain pills while the entire Weston clan returns for the services. The clan which includes Violet’s sister, Mattie Fae Aiken played by Emmy winner Margo Martindale, her husband Charles played by Oscar winner Chris Cooper & their son, Little Charles played by Golden Globe nominee Benedict Cumberbatch. Also returning home were Violet’s three daughters: Barbara played by Oscar winner Julia Roberts and her husband Bill along with their 14-year old daughter, Jean played by Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin. Violet’s other daughter is Ivy played by Julianne Nicholson & then there’s wild child, Karen played by Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis, who brings her fiancé Steve played by Dermot Mulroney. Between the bickering & jokes, old truths come to the surface, jealousies flourish, & eventually each of the characters confronts some past hurt or future fear. Emmy award winning director John Wells & screenwriter Tracy Letts who adapted his 2008 Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same name depict one of the most dysfunctional, cruel & twisted families I have ever seen. At times it was very uncomfortable to see how each of them were treating each other. The performances from this all-star cast were excellent, powerful & heartbreaking. It was nice to see Julia Roberts in an unglamorous role that we dont typically see her in. SEE THIS FILM. This film was up for 2 Golden Globe awards:Meryl Streep for Best Actress & Julia Roberts for Best Supporting Actress. They are up for an Oscar for the same category.
