AUSTRALIA’S BEST DIVERS VIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP Minister for Sport and Recreation, Gabrielle Upton, officially opened the Australian Open Diving Championships today at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. “Australia’s best divers, including high profile stars like Olympians Matthew Mitcham and Melissa Wu, and invited guests from around the world will compete for glory from 12-15 December at the Australian Open Diving Championships” said Ms Upton. “This exhilarating competition will feature 1 metre, 3 metre, Platform and Synchronised events for men and women, creating a fantastic display for spectators. “The 2014 Shadow Team for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, National Squads and the male and female Australian Diver of the Year will all be selected from the performances at the Championship.” Ms Upton was also pleased to announce the event was supported through the NSW Government’s Sport and Recreation Events Program. “This program provides funding for international, national and regional sporting events held in NSW,” she said. “Events such as these ensure local athletes, officials and volunteers have opportunities to participate in high-level sporting competitions. “Sporting events also benefit the NSW tourism and sport industries by generating valuable economic spin-offs for local business.” For more information on the Sport and Recreation Events Program, please visit the website at dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants or phone 13 13 02.
