AUTO CRASH: TWO STUDENTS, TEACHER, TRAILER DRIVER FEARED DEAD IN ENUGU Posted in:Breaking News, Featured, News, Society, Top News Four persons were feared dead in a ghastly auto accident involving a trailer conveying empty crates of beer at the IBB flyover near Akanu Ibiam International airport on the Enugu – Abakaliki highway Friday afternoon. The victims included two students of New Haven Secondary School, a female teacher and the driver of the trailer whose National Driver’s Licence bears Kebiru Ibrahim of 15 Omoregbe Street off Lucky Way, Benin-City. Although the identities of the two students could not be immediately confirmed, two school identity cards recovered after they were pulled from under the trailer reads Miss Onebunne Mmesom and Master Okolie Chiemerie in SS1A. Eyewitnesses told ADVOCATE NIGERIA that the trailer driver was heading towards Emene when he lost control of the vehicle apparently on account of over-speeding and swept both the teacher and the students from the flyover down to the foot of the bridge. Both the trailer, empty bottles and plastic crates were smashed at the foot of the bridge from where bodies of the victims were recovered and conveyed to the Annunciation Hospital Emene, Enugu. The female teacher, who had multiple fractures, and was in coma, was rushed to the National Orthopedic Hospital . Construction workers from Arab Contractors Ltd who were working close to the scene of the accident led the rescue operation, pulling out the victims from under the trailer and later pulled up the vehicle to enable officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, the Nigeria Police and sympathisers, to conduct further search for the victims as it was feared that more students could have been affected. 20150123_143907 Sympathizers and students at the scene of the accident Thursday afternoon Headmaster of the New Haven Secondary School, Mr. Patrick Owoh and some of his teachers, who arrived the scene shortly after the crash were thrown into confusion as other students who saw the battered bodies of their colleagues being pulled out wept profusely. The corpse of the driver which was the last to be pulled out was taken to Annunciation Hospital by FRSC officials. One of the female teachers of the school said that the school had just closed for the day and the students were on their way home when the accident occurred, describing the development as very tragic. She called on the Enugu State Government to compel the contractors handling the reconstruction of the IBB flyover to as a matter of urgency erect some concrete or iron barricades to prevent frequent fall of heavy duty vehicles on the newly redesigned flyover bridge. “We are happy that the government has redesigned the IBB flyover to ensure free flow of traffic but we are very concerned about the frequent accident occurring in this area. Our school is very close to the bridge and nothing meaningful has been done to protect students boarding vehicles either to Emene old road or Abakaliki road and this has exposed both the students and teachers to danger. Something should be done urgently to forestall further carnage on the flyover,” said the teacher who preferred anonymity. It would be recalled that heavy duty vehicles moving from Abakaliki road towards the Akanu Ibiam Airport had been experiencing severe difficulty owing to the defects on the construction of the flyover where many trucks had fallen, destroying goods worth millions of naira and claiming several lives. This, however, may have informed the decision of the state government to redesign the flyover but part of the job has not been completed.
