AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code Clause 3. Prequalification of WPS 3.1. Scope Prequalification of WPSs (Welding Procedure Specifications) shall be defined as exempt from the WPS qualification testing required in Section 4. All prequalified WPSs shall be written. In order for a WPS to be prequalified, conformance with all of the applicable requirements of Section 3 shall be required. WPSs that do not conform to the requirements of Section 3 may be qualified by tests in conformance with Section 4. For convenience, Annex Q lists provisions to be included in a prequalified WPS, and which should be addressed in the fabricator’s or Contractor’s welding program. Welders, welding operators and tack welders that use prequalified WPSs shall be qualified in conformance with Section 4, Part C. Question: Does it mean, a contractor can have use these Pre-qualified WPS as long as it conforms to all provisions of of Clause 3, and at the same time use this Pre-qualified WPS to qualify his welders under Clause 4 Part C? Second, does pre-qualified WPS good only for a single welding process? meaning a joint cannot be welded by combination of two or more welding process (say GMAW 1st pass & SMAW succeeding passes) even if the Joint Details conforms to Fig. 3.3.
