AZMI SHAROM SAYS... In a statement that proves one does not need any sort of qualification (including intelligence) to be a minister, Wan Junaidi Wan Jaafar said that there are more statutory rape cases amongst Malays because they report it more readily. And, this is the real killer part of his statement, they do so because they are “more sensitive” to such cases compared to other races. Hmmm, so this means that the Kadazan, Chinese, Indian, Iban, Eurasian etc. peoples of Malaysia are rather blasé about the raping of children compared to the holy Malays? I wonder where he got his information from. Was there a study conducted by the Home Ministry? If not and this is just his opinion, then it is a very inflammatory opinion indeed and to say it is unwise to make such an unfounded and frankly racist claim (to say that a people take something as serious as child rape seriously or not depending on their ethnicity is undeniably racist), is an understatement. But, apart from the obvious question of “how can such a person hold a position of authority?” what this sorry affair indicates is that too often important issues are simply not dealt with properly. The people who hold the rein of power in this land appear to be blinded by racial prejudice and the inability to seriously and impartially examine a problem and then find the best way to handle it. Shouldn’t the first question that arises in the minds of anyone who sees the figures of statutory rape in Malaysia be “why is this happening with such frequency in the Malay community?” It could be a host of so many reasons, including geographical, social, economic and cultural. One needs a clear head to handle such a sensitive and tragic issue; not a fuzzy mind intent on making excuses. Which brings us to the recent stories found on the pages of this publication and that is the matter of the Social Inclusion Act. If Wan Junaidi has shown us anything, it is that this nation needs to entrust the job of finding solutions to our problems not just to the elected officials of our country. This is why the idea of the SIA, that is to say the creation of a Commission consisting of highly qualified individuals, to study and propose measures to combat social exclusion, such an important one. God only knows such things can’t be left to the jokers who run this country. rakyattimes/index.php/2013-12-14-08-12-51/284-in-malaysia-one-doesn-t-need-any-qualification-including-intelligence-to-be-a-minister
