Aamir Khan+ Rajkumar Hirani = A good PK ingredient + Not-so-good - TopicsExpress

Aamir Khan+ Rajkumar Hirani = A good PK ingredient + Not-so-good spices + Decorative garnishing PK could very well have been a film to remember for a long long time. The thematic ingredient was there. The witty humor of Rajkumar Hirani was there. The excellence of Aamir Khan was there. One must say that its a good film, but couldnt the film have escalated to greater heights? Before criticizing the criticizable aspects, lets talk of what was good. The concept of PK being an alien was well placed. Its not for the sake of surprise, but it gave Rajkumar Hirani the scope to create a character with emotional maturity, yet without precognition and prejudices. The characterization, otherwise, would have been difficult. The way of perceiving religions, differences and nonsense practices in the name of religions, have been highlighted very well. Without considering the aesthetics, the film deserves a lot of appreciation for the thematic boldness, relevance and its importance to the society. Aamir Khan acted wonderfully, as expected. One might find similarities in his expressions in PK with some earlier films, but one must admit that he knows his limitations very well, and he brings the best out of him every time. Yes, Rajkumar Hirani did give him a lot of scope for acting in this character, but he made sure to grab the opportunity in almost every scene. There is only one scene towards the end (in the studio where he starts speaking with the shoe of his friend in hand and tears in his eyes) where Aamir Khan seemed out of the character when he started, but soon caught up. Cinematography and editing were of industry standard, but nothing too special. There were small flaws in continuity in a scene or two. Music was good, but the lyrics failed to match the best of standards. Character building and dialogues were focused on PK (Aamir Khan) only. The other characters were let loose. Its not something we would expect from a very good directer. The Belgium love plot and the Hindu-Muslim, India-Pakisthan sentiments were just not needed. They pulled the film down. The climax (studio scene again) was too melodramatic and far from being subtly placed. A couple of dance sequence added nothing to the film, but subtracted some quality for sure. Amidst some quality witty humor, a couple of forced funny elements didnt make things too funny. But yes, the nudity was handled well. I was afraid that it could be more of a hype-building gimmick, but in the context of the film, it wasnt. It was placed well, and handled well. Overall, everyone must watch this film, simply because of the thematic content. Its an important film, specially for those who keep too many wrong numbers in their brains. Enjoyed the film, but again, hoping to see something without the Bollywood spices next time. I mean, when AK works with RH again.
