The guy at the railyard was an example of a honest person and the guy in the bar is an example of a liar(he was covering for the antagonist). Because this was back in the 1940s, you couldnt divorce someone easily at the drop of a hat given that you had to have good reason before a court to do so, which was why the guy had his friend slaughter a hog to fake his own death. Nothing like this would make much sense in these current times.
