Aayatul Kursi Chapter 1 (Please share on your page timeline) Name of Ayatul Kursi: This ayah was given its name by Prophet Muhammad (a.s.) because he referred to this ayah as Ayatul Kursi due to the word “Kursi” being used by Allah (swt) when He (swt) says: وسع کرسیہ السموات و الارض Having established the origin of the name of this ayah, it would be relevant to mention a few traditions which highlight its importance so we are able to begin grasping the greatness of this ayah. 1. The greatest ayah in the Quran is the Ayatul Kursi. (Prophet Muhammad (a.s.)) 2. If you knew the various benefits hidden in this ayah, then you will never forget to recite it. (Imam Ali (a.s.)) 3. O Ali, The master of words is the Quran; the master of the Quran is Al-Baqarah; and the master of Al- Baqara is Ayatul Kursi. O Ali indeed there are 50 words in this ayah and each word contains 50 barakaat and blessings inside them. (Prophet Muhammad (a.s.) Where does Ayatul Kursi begin and end? Having mentioned a few of the traditions regarding the importance of this ayah, it would be relevant to establish where “Ayatul Kursi” begins and ends. Although there is a difference of opinion where the ayah ends, the beginning of the ayah is unanimously agreed upon to be verse 255 of Surah Al Baqarah. There is a difference of opinion of whether Ayatul Kursi is one ayah, ending withوھو العلی العظیم or three ayahs, ending with ھم فیھا خالدون in ayah 257 of Al Baqarah. There are many hadith which ask us to recite all three ayaat when reciting Ayatul Kursi. Some people may argue that it doesn’t matter if it’s one ayah or three however if Ayatul Kursi is three ayaat and you only recite one then a person will be at a loss when reciting Namaz-e-Wahshat-e-Qabr for example. Ayatul Kursi is an important part of the namaz. In books of fiqh; the fatwa is to recite Aayatul Kursi until ھم فیھا خالدون, but if someone recites until وھو العلی العظیم then he has to repeat the namaz. We can now begin discussing the benefits of Ayatul Kursi together with understanding what Allah is asking us to proclaim in these verses. Aayatul Kursi begins with This sentence is similar to لا الہ الا اللہ “There is no God except Allah” however in Ayatul Kursi, He (swt) not only says “There is no God except He” but goes further and tells us He is “the Living, the Everlasting”. These first few words of Ayatul Kursi can be divided into two parts: 1. Allah asks us to deny and reject all other gods except Allah (swt). 2. He (swt) tells us of three of his names. The main mission of Prophet Muhammad (a.s.) was to announce the oneness of Allah because the Arabs in the time of jahilliyya worshipped multiple gods. When the prophet came he said: قولوا لا الہ الا للہ تفلحوا Say there is no god except Allah They replied: اجعل الآلھۃ الھا واحدا ان ھذا لشیء عجاب Did he make gods to be a single Allah? A strange thing is this (ص، آیت ۵) It is only humans who believe in different gods but all the creations of Allah believe only in Allah: الم تر ان اللہ یسجد لہ من فی السموات و من فی الارض والشمس و القمر و النجوم و الجبال و الشجر و الدواب و کثیر من الناس و کثیر حق علیہ العذاب Have you not considered that those in the heavens and the earth, the Sun, the Moon, the Stars, the mountains, the trees, the animals, and many people, all bow down to God? But many people deserve His punishment (Al-Hajj Ayat 18). So all Allah wants for humanity is to leave Shirk and believe only in Allah who is Living and everlasting.
