Abalone were once so abundant on the California coast that my dad came home from his diving work with them on a regular basis. Through the 70s and 80s, their numbers dwindled so drastically that theyre now both rare and heavily regulated, which in turn has lead to big business for black-market poachers. And regulations against using scuba equipment mean the poaching is incredibly dangerous, with many diving deaths annually. Its time to call off the hunt and let the species re-populate... but a total ban on ab diving would only invigorate the poachers market. Ugh.
