Abiding Hope Lutheran Church, 5312 Peach Street, announces How Sweet the Sound, a cultural event series celebrating a wide range of local talent. Audiences will experience artful sounds as played, sung, spoken and dramatized. The inaugural event will take place on Sunday, October 27 at 3:00 PM and feature the husband and wife team of Joseph Kneer and Lydia Beasley. They come to us from the faculty of Mercyhurst University. Each of them has crafted a distinguished individual career at a very young age; Joseph as a superb violinist and choral conductor and Lydia as an accomplished soprano with extensive experience in both opera and as a concert soloist. Among the works to be presented will be the first four movements of the Bach Partita No. 2 in D Minor for solo violin and Song Cycle "Along the Field" by Ralph Vaughan Williams On December 5th at 6:30 the SONLIGHT Puppets will present their 2013 Christmas show to be followed by kid friendly activities and refreshments. The SONLIGHT Puppets, under the direction of Norma Buerk, have been delighting audiences of all ages for the last twenty-seven years. All of the characters are hand-made and new shows are created each season. They feature music, comedy and a Christian message. On February 13, 2014 at 7:00 PM, “Enhanced Poetry” will headline a group of Erie’s finest poets in an evening devoted to the spoken word. “Enhanced Poetry” consists of Chuck Joy and Kurt Sahlman. Chuck has long been recognized as one of Erie’s finest poets as well as a driving force in Erie’s poetry community. Kurt is both an active poet and an accomplished musician. Between them they present a unique and highly entertaining mixture of poetry and music. In addition other local poets will present their works including a special guest and published poet, Pastor John Coleman. On March 13, 1914, The Misery Bay Dulcimer Club will present an evening of music as you may have heard it a hundred and fifty years ago; unamplified, filled with melodies that echo Celtic, Scottish, English and Early Americana. For nearly twenty-five years The Misery Bay group, under the direction of Barb Nagle, has brought this often neglected type of music to the Erie and surrounding areas. And they just keep getting better. If you are a little tired of three guitars and a drum kit and would like to occasionally sing along to a recognizable song, this is an evening you don’t want to miss. The season will wind up on Thursday April 10, 2014 when Scott and Kim McClelland join us for a unique evening of theater. When they owned and operated the Roadhouse Theater they developed a program called “Lovers, Haters and Others” built around their past performances that included Richard III, Come Back Little Sheba, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe, Streetcar Named Desire, Betrayal by Harold Pinter and others. Not only do they recreate these roles but they also talk about the challenges and experiences of bringing them to life. If you are a theater junkie, you don’t want to miss this. All programs will take place at Abiding Hope Lutheran Church at 5312 Peach. All are free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be accepted.
