About 10.30am today a 32 year old male from Woodberry (Maitland / Raymond Terrace) was on a kayaking adventure in the Barrington River. The man was travelling with a small party of family and friends. The group had planned to kayak from Rocky Crossing to Barrington. Due to recent rains the Barrington River was flowing well with rapids forming in different locations. The male was in the process of negotiating some rapids when his kayak collided heavily with a partially submerged tree stump. The kayak was rolled and the man tipped into the river. He became stuck in a whirlpool with his body being submerged then resurfaced, then submerged again, a number of times. The mans clothing became wedged on underwater branches and he could not get free. Part of his face was just above waterline and facing downstream. The man could not free himself from the snagged branches. Other person in the kayaking group came to his aid, and after about 15 minutes of frantic effort the man was able to be released from the branches. The man was taken to shore by his kayaking companions and emergency agencies contacted. The man was conveyed to Gloucester Hospital for assessment and treatment. The man was wearing a life jacket at the time of this incident.
