About 2.5 years ago I found two tiny little baby pitties in a cage that were on hold for a cruelty case. I begged Safe Humane to let me take these dogs when ready. They were named Abbott and Costello. They couldnt be released due to the court case going on for neglect. Abbott had instantly stolen my heart. I got the call that they were ready for pick up and it was like Christmas morning And Easter morning combined with your birthday! They went to the vet, got checked out and was cleared for their first adoption event! Originally Brittany Ann and Bryan Sarsfield came for Abboott but he was SO stressed he was not ready to go anywhere for a while. They decided to take Costello a possible for foster to adopt. He had knuckling over of his legs due to nutrition which did in fact straighten up with a good diet, less stress and good care. I called my husband to rush to Pets Supplies Plus in Bolingbrook to pick Abbott up because his stress was increasing and he starting snapping at the other dogs there and his eyes were turning bloodshot! On the ride home he slept in Ryanns lap (my daughter) and was in pure heaven. I fell in love. Brody (our big guy) was not so much a fan because puppies annoy him lol he was too goofy and fun, Such a sweetheart. I begged and begged to keep him but Jason made a valid point, he needed socializing outside of the house in a busy environment to learn how to cope with chaos! Casey A. Quinn had our sweet Ali at the time who came to us in horrific shape, which Casey did a fantastic job of turning her around and getting enough weight on her to get spayed and such. Ali took forever to find her forever home and we could not figure out why! (in the end she found the PERFECT home) Abbott had gotten his basic skills down at my home but he needed more. He needed to go outside in a busy area being the only dog (for training purposes) and have one on one with someone that understands dogs and has the lifestyle to take him on multiple walks and where he would have to break himself of his nervous behavior. The poor guy had to go to a temporary foster home until Ali got adopted to go to Casey. In his temporary foster home he was regressing with the other dogs living there and he was confused. I was ready to take Abbott back but Ali got adopted! Its like fate intervened. Casey was open to take Abbott in her home and expose him to the big City of Chicago. Which Casey put up with a LOT at first with Abbott because the poor guy had to adjust again to a new home. He got sick with stomach problems and poor Casey was washing his cage and him daily only after a few hours being away. She never gave up on him. Never. This poor guy went through hell from stress, a major injury to his knee that required a pretty big surgery that wasnt preventable and being adopted to the absolutely wrong family that we did extensive home checks on. Casey and I spoke with the family on several occasions to make sure this was a fit. Abbott loved kids. Abbott did fabulous with the kids as well. My home and temporary foster both had children that he was in love with. The adopter after 2 months said Abbott didnt work out, he tried to bite the child (with no evidence to prove it). Abbott actually came back to Casey shaken up and not the same. Depressed and we dont know what happened there. We home checked, spoke, emailed, reference checked and did everything we could but people still amaze us. Anyway, Casey decided she couldnt part with him again. They had been through too much together and it was obvious they were meant for each other. I cant tell you how my heart felt when Casey decided to adopt Abbott. It was like I had won the lottery, in reality Abbott did. He was home. Finally. Now, every year on the day Abbott came to Caseys home they celebrate. She accepts him, his flaws, his goofiness, his awesomeness, his quirks and his love. He also accepts her harassing him with outfits ;) lol they are two that were meant together. You know that saying that there is a dog for every person? I truly believe thats true. I wish this for all our dogs that get adopted. For the rest of Caseys life no one will compare to Abbott. I remember her coming to us to apply to foster and intimidated about fostering pitbulls. Not because she was afraid of them because she never owned one before. Casey has this natural ability to communicate with dogs that amazes me when she attends events. Shes confident, she wants to learn more, she has a natural ability to connect with any dog she handles. We are so happy we found Casey and all those other rescues ignored her applications. They didnt call back, they didnt email or communicate. As the person that took her application, there was nothing alarming to make me not want to call back. Well guess what? Their loss our gain :) especially the lives she has touched. I am honored to have met her, have her in my life and know such a fun, caring and thoughtful person. Happy Gotcha Day Abbott and Casey! I look forward to many years of these pictures. They make me cry happy tears because A) she stole my dog (haha) and B) they adore each other C) I love seeing those crazy outfits on Abbott! Much love to you both from DHHG!
